Going grey together

So you’ve retired, decided its time to kick-up your heels and have a good time.
You’ve spent years running around at top speed, trying to please everyone and, as the years have gone by, got more than a little peeved at being made to do things you would rather not.

And now, when you can finally look forward to a bit of time on your hands, people will start asking how you are planning to keep occupied.

Finding a new hobby is just fine for many, learning a new skill is just the thing to keep the brain active but, teach an old dog new tricks – no thanks, you have been around the block a few times and been working our magic for years.

But GRWE, the UK’s biggest independent charity for the re-homing of greyhounds and lurchers, is hoping to encourage those of a certain age of the wisdom of joining forces with a pet who has experienced a similar hectic schedule in its early life.

GRWE speaks out about China import plans

17th March 2011

GRWE has expressed serious concerns over recent meetings between the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) and Chinese investors in relation to developing a greyhound racing industry and exporting Irish racing greyhounds to China.

Little animal welfare legislation exists in China to protect dogs, and the Insert Region Name Region of GRWE, the UK's largest greyhound and lurcher rehoming organisation, is concerned that the basic welfare needs of the greyhounds would not be met, should greyhound racing gain popularity there.

Morrison's opens doors to greyhounds

15th March 2011

A greyhound called Lenny and his sidekick, lurcher friend Suzie, will be meeting and greeting shoppers at the Hereford branch of Morrison’s this Saturday, 19th March, in a bid to raise funds for other greyhounds and lurchers currently in the care of Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE), the UK’s largest independent greyhound rescue.

Now aged 11, Lenny was taken to a rescue when his racing career faltered but soon found a second career when he was adopted by a GRWE volunteer and pressed into service as breed ambassador for less fortunate hounds. When not working tirelessly to promote his breed, Lenny enjoys fine dining, (he is particularly partial to yoghurt), and extended siestas on the sofa he shares with lurcher, Suzie.

Lonely Tony Valentine

Can you give a lonely dog some love this Valentine’s Day?

Press Release – Monday 31st January 2011

As couples around the country look forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day again, local charity Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE), is appealing for a loving home for adorable greyhound Tony, who is lonely and looking for love.

Valentine’s Day is a time to feel loved and to give love, but across the country not everyone is so lucky at this time of year. GRWE currently have a variety of beautiful lurchers and greyhounds in their care, all looking for someone to give them love, walks and hugs.

Tony is a four year old greyhound desperately looking for a loving new owner. He came to GRWE at the end of his racing career, and moved in with a foster family, where he has proved a faithful companion. Tony is a handsome lad with a big heart to match his stature. A lovely friendly boy, he enjoys short walks in the countryside and, of course, long nights in.

Stuart Parslow, GRWE PR Officer explains: “It’s so sad to think of Tony all alone on Valentine’s Day whilst the nation spends time with their loved ones. We really hope Tony will find a permanent home soon as we’re sure he will make someone a lovely pet. If you think you may be able to offer Tony or any one of our needy greyhounds or lurchers a loving home, please get in touch on 07000 785 092 or visit www.grwe.com .”

Stuart adds “and don’t forget, even if you can’t rehome a dog from us, there are still many ways to help, including Sponsoring a Dog, donating, becoming a member, or even volunteering, so please visit our website for more details.”
