Welcome to Greyhound Rescue West of England
Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) is the leading greyhound rescue charity in England and Wales independent of the greyhound racing industry. We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of abused and abandoned greyhounds and lurchers. From humble beginnings in the west of England the charity now operates nationally - throughout the south-west and up through to Lancashire & Cumbria in the north-west, and across the home counties to Kent in the far south-east - rehoming around 800 of these special dogs every year.
GRWE takes in greyhounds and lurchers from members of the public, veterinary surgeries, dog wardens and the police. We also help trainers and owners rehome their racing greyhounds and some dogs also come to us from general rescue centres. Some greyhounds also come from as far afield as Ireland and Scotland if resources allow.
GRWE takes in greyhounds of all ages, from puppies to geriatrics! Some dogs are cruelty cases, physically and emotionally scarred and damaged. We nurse them back to health and help them learn to trust humans again. Some are so scarred by their ordeal they need a long period of foster care before rehoming, others need very special permanent homes. Fortunately, greyhounds are by nature gentle, very resilient and will still be wagging their tails gently even when found in the most deplorable conditions.
We are constantly humbled by the grace and gentleness of these noble hounds - not least their willingness to forgive the pain inflicted and learn to trust us again.
